How to Rat Proof Your Trash Cans

How to Rat Proof Your Trash Cans

Your smelly trash is heavenly to mice, rats and rodents of all kinds! If you want to keep these unwanted guests away from your home, there are a few key steps to making this dream a reality.

1. Seal Your Trash Can

The more difficult you make it for rats to get into your trash, the less likely they are to get in. Be sure to go the extra mile to seal any pet food or nearest food supply.

2. Keep the Area Clean

Rodents love warm, cozy, smelly places. Be sure to clean your cans regularly from trash spillage. Sweep out corners and areas where they can hide and build nests.

3. Repellent

Rats have a keen sense of smell, so you can use this to your advantage! There are a lot of commercial options, as well as some home remedies:

    Ammonia
    Peppermint oil
    Castor oil
    Citronella oil

Soak cotton balls or old rags and tuck them around your trash can and corners.

4. Poison

Rat poisons and traps will definitely make a dent in the amount of rats that are around your home. However this is the least humane option.

If you have pets, be sure to use poison in places where your pet would NEVER GO!

5. Get a Cat!

Cats love to hunt! Be ready to receive “gifts.” Your proud kitty will happily bring you their trophy with each kill.

Hopefully these points will help guide you towards a solution of a rat free home.
